Texas Tech University Barks & Recreation Pet-Friendly Event
Each year, TTU brings dogs and cats from Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare to its teaching hospital. At the end of each school year, they host an adoption event to help these animals find loving homes. These animals are well-cared for, have received appropriate veterinary care, and are matched with homes based on a variety of factors.
Fast CAT
Hosted locally by Panhandle Kennel Club, Fast CAT®, which stands for Coursing Ability Test, is a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run one at a time, chasing a lure. It’s over before you know it and it’s nothing short of awe-inspiring to watch your dog run at top speed. And if your dog is really fast, you might earn bragging rights if their name makes it onto the list of top 20 fastest dogs by breed! All dogs can participate in Fast CAT, whether purebred or mixed breed.
Barn Hunt
“Rat catchers” rid farms of destructive vermin – and the hunting and teamwork skills required to do so are the foundation of the sport of Barn Hunt. Dogs and their handlers work as a team to locate and mark rats (safely held in aerated tubes) hidden in a maze of straw or hay bales.
Some breeds are specifically created to fill this role, but as long as your dog can fit through an 18″ wide by bale-height tall tunnel, he’s eligible! Barn Hunt tests the nose, speed, agility, and surefootedness of dogs that have a history of above-ground vermin hunting.
Panhandle Kennel Club Dog Show
The PKC is a non-profit organization formed to advance the interests of purebred dog breeds and educate our community on responsible dog ownership. Visit their Facebook page for additional details regarding event times.
